p-Toluenesulfonic acid is a sulfonic acid that has been used in the industrial preparation of various polymeric matrices. It has also been used as a medicinal preparation to treat conditions such as hydrochloric acid peptic ulcers, and is an ingredient in some topical preparations for skin burns. p-Toluenesulfonic acid can be found in the form of its homologues, including p-toluenesulfinic acid, p-toluenesulfonyl chloride, and p-toluenesulfonyl fluoride. The presence of hydroxyl groups on these molecules allows them to be converted into other derivatives such as malic acid. The carbon source for this conversion is often trifluoroacetic acid or coumarin derivatives. These derivatives are analyzed using LC-MS/MS methods.
